Marriott International signs agreement for the first Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Shanghai, introducing the brand’s first urban concept in a major global gateway city.
Ritz-Carlton Reserve Shanghai will become the brand’s first urban concept after Marriott International signed an agreement with Shanghai SIIC North Bund New Landmark Construction and Development Co., Ltd. The hotel is scheduled to open in 2030.
The new property will bring the Ritz-Carlton Reserve approach to Shanghai. It will combine personalised service, wellbeing experiences and local cultural connections in one of China’s leading business and tourism destinations.
Marriott expands Ritz-Carlton Reserve presence
Ritz-Carlton Reserve has traditionally focused on destination properties that offer privacy, personalised experiences and a strong connection to their surroundings.
With the Shanghai project, Marriott will introduce an urban version of the concept. The company said the new approach will adapt the Reserve experience for selected global gateway cities.
Urban Reserve properties will focus on cultural discovery, wellbeing and curated experiences. They will offer guests a sense of retreat within major cities rather than remote destinations.
Tina Edmundson, President of Luxury, Marriott International, said: “Ritz-Carlton Reserve has always been about creating rare, deeply personal experiences that could only exist in their destination. There is an intimacy to Reserve – an extraordinary level of personalisation, a deep connection to local culture, and a sense of discovery and wellbeing that allows guests to experience a place in an entirely different way. Bringing that philosophy to Shanghai for our first urban Reserve is an incredibly exciting evolution for the brand.”
Hotel planned for Shanghai’s North Bund
The Ritz-Carlton Reserve Shanghai will form part of a major mixed-use development in the North Bund area. The project will include hospitality, retail, office spaces, residences and an observatory deck.
The development will rise approximately 480 metres across 103 floors. It will add to Shanghai’s waterfront skyline. Upon opening, Shanghai is expected to become the only city worldwide to feature all eight Marriott International luxury brands.
Luxury accommodation and guest experiences
The hotel will feature 110 guest rooms and suites. The accommodation will focus on privacy, personalised service and a connection with Shanghai’s character.
Many rooms and suites will offer views of the Bund and Huangpu River. The property will also include a Presidential Suite. In addition, the hotel will provide dining, wellness and cultural experiences. Facilities will include a speciality restaurant, Chinese dining concepts, a lobby lounge, a bespoke bar, an indoor swimming pool, a fitness centre and a spa retreat.
Marriott said these facilities will respond to growing demand among luxury travellers for wellbeing, cultural immersion and experience-led stays.
Partnership with Shanghai SIIC
Huang Haiping, Vice President of SIIC Group and Chairman of Shanghai SIIC North Bund Landmark Construction and Development Co., Ltd., said: “As North Bund continues to evolve into one of Shanghai’s most important waterfront districts, our vision is to create a landmark destination that contributes to the city’s emergence as a leading global center for culture, commerce, and tourism.”
He added that the collaboration with Marriott International aims to create a luxury property that reflects Shanghai’s character and provides experiences for guests from around the world.
The agreement strengthens Marriott International’s luxury portfolio in Greater China. It also reflects the company’s focus on personalised hospitality, wellness, and destination-based experiences in key global markets.
