Marriott marches forward in APAC

Marriott International is pushing ahead with its expansion plan in Asia Pacific, with another 100 new properties set to open in the region in 2021.

The pace of growth continues its growth momentum in 2020, which saw 75 new properties launched, including its 800th hotel opening in APAC when JW Marriott Nara opened its doors on 22 July.

Nearly 27,000 rooms were added to the region’s development pipeline last year, and signing of Marriott’s largest branded residences project with close to 4,200 units.

In Greater China, which “continues to be the brightest big market” for the company, Marriott will soon welcome its 400th hotel and its 50th hotel in Shanghai when JW Marriott Shanghai Fengxian opens later this spring.

Marriott will this year beef up its luxury portfolio with W Changsha, W Xiamen, St Regis Qingdao and The Ritz-Carlton Reserve Jiuzhaigou — which means China will also be APAC’s first country to house all of Marriott’s luxury names.

Elsewhere in China, Marriott is set to introduce Sheraton Mianyang in the Sichuan province and The Westin Nanjing Resort & Spa.

Beyond China, in Q2 Marriott’s signature wellness brand Westin will open in India’s Goa while the Ritz-Carlton will make its debut in the Maldives. South Korea will welcome JW Marriott Jeju in late 2021.

Down Under, The Tasman in Hobart will be an extension of The Luxury Collection, while the country’s second W Hotel will enter Melbourne in Q1, alongside the addition of Melbourne Marriott Hotel Docklands in early 2021.

To support domestic travel in Japan, Marriott will be launching a string of properties as the country gears up to host the Olympics this year.

The W Hotels brand will make its debut in Osaka, while six additional Fairfield by Marriott hotels will open in Japan throughout 2021 along ‘Michi-no-Eki’ roadside stations aimed at revitalising the country’s local sightseeing spots. A total of more than 30 Fairfield by Marriott properties will be launched in Japan by 2023.
