North Korea is close to opening a Kim Jong-un-inspired tourist resort in the Wonsan-Kalma Tourist Zone.
Hotels, a waterpark, a marina, theatres and funfairs have risen along several miles of the Wonsan beachfront.
But many observers fear that due to travel restrictions and economic sanctions the resort development will become a white elephant.
Commercial satellite imagery published by the US-based 38 North website, which provides expert analysis of North Korea’s political landscape, shows recent activity at the site following a visit from the North Korean leader.
Located on the South-east coast of North Korea, Wonsan-Kalma is where Kim Jong Un spent his childhood summers.
The beach resort is located adjacent to the dual-use Kalma International Airport. This airport was used originally for military purposes, but was renovated starting in 2013.
Satellite images in July 2018 revealed a massive construction project on the Kalma beachfront, with more than 100 buildings under construction, presumably an assortment of hotels, condos and other resort facilities, including at least 40 multi-storey structures, 38 North reported.
