IHG to double its footprint in Thailand

BANGKOK – InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has partnered Thai real estate group Asset World Corporate (AWC) to develop more than 1,200 rooms across the country.

The partnership is part of IHG’s plans to double its portfolio in Thailand over the next three- to five years, said Serena Lim, vice president, development, IHG South East Asia and Korea.

The Group currently operates 29 existing hotels across six brands in Thailand, and is expecting to add a further 30 hotels.

The agreement will cover the signing of hotels in destinations such as Chiang Mai, Bangkok and Hua Hin within three years, IHG said in a release.

It has revealed its first signing for the 306-room InterContinental Chiang Mai Mae Ping, which will be a conversion of the nearly 30-year Imperial Mae Ping Hotel. The iconic hotel in downtown Chiang Mai has over its long history welcomed royalty, heads of state and celebrities.

“With our ambition to make Thailand a truly world-class tourism destination, we are excited to be extending our partnership with IHG, which is a testament to our unique business model of collaborating with an internationally renowned operator,” commented Wallapa Traisorat, CEO and president of AWC.

The hotel’s offerings will cater to both leisure and MICE travellers. These include six food and beverage outlets and over 3,600sqm of outdoor and indoor convention, event and meeting spaces. It will also have a wellness retreat, Lanna Spa, which offers spa services and traditional and fusion Lanna cuisine.

The hotel’s Teresa Teng Museum located on the 15th floor suite, which commemorate the famous Taiwanese singer, will be converted to a specialty restaurant and rooftop bar. There, guests can experience its original set-up, decor and furniture when Teresa Teng last stayed at the hotel over two decades ago.
