Marriott International has announced an agreement to acquire the lifestyle brand citizenM, a move that is expected to accelerate Marriott’s global expansion in the select-service and lifestyle hotel sectors.

The acquisition, which is set to close in 2025, will see Marriott pay US$355 million for citizenM, including the brand’s intellectual property. The deal will also include long-term franchise agreements for the hotels owned and leased by the seller. Marriott anticipates that the citizenM portfolio will generate approximately US$30 million annually in stabilised fees. Additionally, the seller may receive earn-out payments up to US$110 million based on the brand’s future growth.

Founded in 2008, citizenM currently operates 36 hotels across more than 20 cities, including major destinations such as New York, London, Paris, and Rome. The brand is known for its tech-savvy guest experience, efficient use of space, and focus on art and design. The portfolio also includes a pipeline of three hotels under construction, slated to open by mid-2026.

“We are thrilled to add citizenM as a unique, differentiated offering to our select-service brand portfolio,” said Anthony Capuano, president and CEO of Marriott International. “This acquisition strengthens Marriott’s presence in the valuable lifestyle segment.”

Rattan Chadha, founder and chairman of citizenM, expressed excitement over the deal, stating, “Marriott shares our values and culture, and I am confident in their deep commitment to continuing our brand’s DNA into the future.”

The transaction is subject to regulatory approval, with Marriott projecting a 5% net room growth in 2025, assuming the deal closes as planned.
