DENPASAR – Hotels in Bali are finding new ways to support local communities during the coronavirus crisis.
Meliá Bali, working with charitable organisations, has donated 250 pieces of unused pillow cases which women in the local area are turning into face masks. These are being donated to villagers and truck drivers.
Another 300 masks have been tailored by the Meliá Bali housekeeping department under the resort’s ‘Linen for Life’ initiative for distribution to communities close to the hotel and to team members.
“Through our contributions, we hope that we will be able to help uplift the more unfortunate communities and give them constant support in any way we can,” said a spokesperson for the resort.
In Sanur, Hyatt Regency Bali has two projects under its “Gift That Gives Back” initiative.
The resort is producing fabric masks to be given to the underprivileged communities of Bali. Others are sold with proceeds used to buy materials to produce more products for the underprivileged communities.
The masks are made in-house by a team of associates supervised by Hyatt Regency’s tailor, Gede using upcycled colourful batik fabric.

Along with selling and donating face masks, the resort’s chefs are making home-made sauces, pastes and sambal for those who want to recreate Hyatt Regency’s Omang Omang and Pizzaria restaurant dishes at home.
Hyatt Regency Bali said sales of the sauces create a stream of income for the resort and local suppliers “and helps us retain our associates”.
