Global tourism up 4% in 1H2019

International tourist arrivals grew 4% from January to June 2019, compared to the same period last year, according to the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer.

Growth was led by the Middle East (+8%) and Asia and the Pacific (+6%). International arrivals in Europe grew 4%, while Africa (+3%) and the US (+2%) enjoyed more moderate growth.

Bangkok to get its first Aman

Luxury resort brand Aman has signed a long-term partnership with Nai Lert Group to develop a hotel and branded residences in Bangkok, Aman’s second in Thailand after Amanpuri in Phuket.

Under the terms of the agreement, construction of Aman Nai Lert Bangkok is scheduled to commence in the coming months, with the luxury hotel and branded residences project expected to open in 2022.

United States-based hotel chain Marriott International is undertaking a massive expansion in Indonesia to tap into the rapid growth in the country’s tourist sector.

Marriott, which operates a number of hotel brands including JW Marriott, Ritz-Carlton, The Westin, Le Meridien, Sheraton and Four Points, is currently building 33 new properties across the country including in newly developed tourist destinations, Marriott International’s chief operating officer Asia Pacific Rajeev Menon said in Jakarta on Monday.

Speaking to the media at the opening of The Kayana Beach Lombok last week, Santika’s general manager business development and marketing communications, Sudarsana, said: “We are looking to develop (upmarket) villas in Borobudur, Labuan Bajo and Mandalika.
