Mandarin Oriental signs on Danang project

Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group will manage a new luxury resort and residences in Danang come 2024, making it the second property to join company’s new portfolio in Vietnam.

Mandarin Oriental, Da Nang will sit on a 30km stretch of beach that links Danang in the north with Hoi An in the south. Its location will put guests in easy reach of surrounding attractions, such as the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Hoi An, My Son and Huế.

Mondrian arrives in Singapore, with plans for more worldwide

Accor will plant a Mondrian property in Singapore come early 2023, one of the first to open in the company’s next-phase expansion plans for the brand since its acquisition of sbe’s hotel brands in November 2020.

The 300-key Mondrian Singapore will be a luxury lifestyle hotel that combines historic architecture from Singapore’s centuries-old shophouses with a new build of modern, contemporary influences. Located in Duxton Hill, the property is being developed by Craig Road Property Holdings.

More Indonesia hotels up for sale as pandemic retains grip

The ongoing pandemic has forced the closure of several small-scale hotels in Indonesia, and it might not be long before the bigger ones follow, should the crisis drag on.

Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (IHRA) Yogyakarta Chapter reported that of its 400 members, 100 hotels have halted operations, 50 have gone bust, while 172 are still operating but “almost dying”.

Marriott CEO Arne Sorenson unexpectedly passes away

Arne Sorenson, who led Marriott International to become the world’s biggest hotel chain after the US$13 billion acquisition of Starwood Hotels & Resorts in 2016, has passed away unexpectedly on February 15 following a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Sorenson, 62, had been battling pancreatic cancer for the past two years. On 2 February, Marriott announced that he would temporarily reduce his schedule to facilitate more demanding treatment for pancreatic cancer.
