Is Bali’s new airport finally ready to take off?

Relief may be coming – finally – to Bali’s overcrowded south with reports that the location of an international airport in the north of the island has been given government approval

The airport will be built in Kubutambahan on 420 hectares of land, according to an agreement signed between Buleleng Regency, Bali Province and Indonesia’s Ministry of Transportation.

“The land is ready. The target is at the beginning of 2019 that the location permit can be issued,” said a local government leader.

Previously, the challenge of land acquisition had stymied development of a new Bali airport to relieve pressure on Ngurah Rai in Denpasar. But one of the options now under consideration is for an offshore airport on reclaimed land.

The progress on development of a North Bali airport comes at a time when plans are taking shape for the development of an integrated resort on 100 hectares of land owned by Menjangan Group, located near Menjangan Island.

With an investment value of US$198 million the land located on the beachfront will be developed as a lifestyle hub consisting of star hotels, villas, retail villages, mangrove forests, and marinas and cruise ship terminal.

A heads of agreement has been signed by ITDC president director Abdulbar M. Mansoer, CEO of Menjangan Group Janitra Limmantoro, and president director of construction company, WIKA Tumiyana.

ITDC was responsible for the development of the Nusa Dua resort enclave and is currently developing a huge integrated resort in Lombok.
